A mini festival from Lyon
This weekend, The Opera Platform offers you 3 one-act operas composed during the first half of the 20th century from Opéra de Lyon.
Our mini festival opens on Friday with David Bösch’s landmark production of Franz Schreker’s Die Gezichneten (The Stigmatised), and continues with Paul Hindemith’s Sancta Susanna on Saturday and Arnold Schoenberg’s Von Heute auf Morgen on Sunday, both directed by John Fulljames.
Discover these examples of Austro-German works from the turbulent period between the beginning of WWI and WWII. |

Genoa in the 16th century, Alviano is a very rich nobleman. On an island next to the city, he has himself built the Elyseum, a domain dedicated to the beauty of nature and arts. But it is a place on which he has not set foot, obsessed by his own ugliness. The self-assured Tamare, on the other hand, is a handsome noble, who has set up, against Alviano’s will, an elaborate brothel on the island, where Genoese nobility have their way with abducted young girls. Between those two men is the painter Carlotta. She is able to see beyond Alviano’s outward deformity into the beauty of his soul. Alviano accepts to pose for her and they fall in love. But Carlotta also feels attracted by the beauty of Tamare, to whom she finally succumbs. The Stigmatised by Franz Schreker

Saturday - Sancta Susanna
The subject is blasphemous, to say the least, dealing as it does with the sexual frustration and fantasies of a nun, Susanna, during a night in May, after hearing the cries of pleasure from a couple making love beside the chapel where she was praying. One of her companions then tells her a story going back forty years: a nun, who was discovered naked, embracing a crucified Christ, was immured alive. Sancta Susanna by Paul Hindemith

Sunday - Von Heute auf Morgen
A married couple come home after a party and, as they get ready to retire for the night, start talking. The Husband does not conceal from his Wife how attracted he feels to a Friend of hers, who lives with a Singer, who passes himself off as an artist freed from social conventions. Fighting jealousy with jealousy, the Woman says that she has also been charmed by the Singer. A domestic row, threats of a break-up, a dance of reconciliation and the unexpected intervention of a child waking up the middle of the night then alternate, thus depicting the myriad nuances of their feelings and agreement in this disagreement. Von Heute auf Morgen by Arnold Schoenberg
